HomeVPNBox

Where to connect the HomeVPNBox?

Just plug the HomeVPNBox in a free port on your existing router or any RJ45 LAN outlet you may have in your home. We recommend to find a location which is quite central to optimise Wireless coverage.

How many devices can I connect?

UNLIMITED! There's no restriction on the number of devices that can be connected over Wi-Fi or wired LAN.

Can I connect my StreamBuddy or AppleTV?

With the HomeVPNBox you can now fully enjoy all Internet and Media services offered by your StreamBuddy other networked players as AppleTV. Simply connect via LAN cable (preferred – if your HomeVPNBox is close by) or via Wi-Fi (not farther than adjacent room).

Will there be a speed impact on regular sites?

Yes. Page loading will be substantially faster since bypassing the Chinese Great Firewall content inspection.

What is RouterPro VPN?

The HomeVPNBox supports Astrill's unique RouterPro VPN protocol which is further optimised for speed and security. This new protocol will run faster than OpenVPN and is designed to work through restrictive firewalls. In case your ISP blocks the traditional VPN protocols, RouterPro VPN the way to go.

VPN Accelerator

The new HomeVPNBox Pro works well with Astrill's VPN accelerator technology which can easily turned on/off through the Router Control page. Combined with the RouterPro VPN protocol, this can potentially increase overall VPN speed as demonstrated below. (A = ON / B = OFF)

How extensive is the choice of VPN Servers?

Astrill is our underlying partner. You can choose between more than 130 VPN servers in 45+ countries  and control the connection via the HomeVPNBox user interface.

Full list of servers can be consulted here.

What are VIP Servers?

This premium VPN plan provides you with prioritized traffic on dedicated servers which are connected directly to Chinese ISPs, as to deliver better speeds and performance.

Does the HomeVPNBox only work in China?

Operates everywhere - take the VPN Router with you and just plug it wherever you may be relocating.

Can I use the VPN outside my Home?

YES! Our RouterPro VPN package comes with one license to be used on the go with the laptop client, iOS or Android application. If you need more we can offer a "Nomadic Package" with 4 additional licenses.

Is download of big files, music or video slower over the VPN?

Since the VPN is connecting outside of the country, the speeds are depending on the International bandwidth which is lower that the local broadband speeds announced by your service provider (China Telecom, China Unicom, ...). In case of download of heavy files which are accessible without VPN, we recommend to use your regular (non-VPN) connection.

Is there any data volume limitation?

No volume cap, but bandwidth will depend on your underlying broadband line of e.g. China Telecom or China Unicom. On fiber connections we are reaching 6-8 Mbps to US servers. On DSL lines 2-3 Mbps which still good for streaming video.

Can I still connect to my corporate VPN?

Yes. No issue to run e.g. IPsec tunnels over the HomeVPNBox Box.
If the HomeVPNBox was plugged into your existing router, the original Wi-Fi access point remains active. So ultimately you will have two Wi-Fi networks to choose from: with and without VPN. This offers maximum flexibility.

Wi-Fi Reach: I have a house, where should I put it?

Putting it in the garage or basement is the worst case deployment. Wi-Fi has its propagation limitations. In a house with eg 3 floors we would typically recommend to install on the middle floor for maximum reach.
Alternatively, if you have a full wired home, we can connect your network the LAN side of HomeVPNBox and put Wi-Fi extenders on each floor.

Can we exclude specific sites from the VPN Tunnel?

The HomeVPNBox supports multiple routing options which you can self-control through a user friendly GUI.
Following filter modes are available:
1) Sites:

  • Tunnel all web sites through VPN
  • Tunnel / exclude specific sites
  • Tunnel only International sites

2) Devices: select which devices you want to tunnel through the VPN

3) Ports: useful for P2P and mail applications
